Many times people on Facebook debate which of the many smileys and emoticons are the best. The reason is that many people have different reasons for using each of these characters. Such as lovers who are at in the same location for whatever reason may feel that the emoticons that represent love are the best.

However romantic people and people in love aren’t the only ones to use Facebook. Many times use Facebook and it’s collection of features that allow users to place emoticons into their status bars. However those who use Facebook to talk with friends and coworkers most likely aren’t going to use the heart emoticon; instead they may use a robot shaped emoticon instead.

With all of this very valuable information in mind we decided to poll thousands of active Facebook users who often use Facebook to chat with the majority of their friends. Based on this poll we have compiled a list of the most used, popular and famous loved smiles. It might surprise you the results.

Number 5 – Facebook Shark Emoticon

The newest emoticon for Facebook chat is the shark. This tiny little emoticon has really taking the large world of social networking by storm. It’s a very cool and even a little edgy shape to use. The shark shaped emoticon fits nicely into the style of Facebook. The image represents the time period of the 1980′s which had a very popular movie called Jaws. The shark emoticon can be used to show a number of things; from eating to even trying to scare something.

The penguin was also a smiley that was added later on in the Facebook world. It become very popular very fast. The main reason being that it show off really well it’s cuteness. Penguins live in the snow making them winter birds. When Christmas or any other winter holiday this bird is also show. However you can also use it to show that you are cold.

Emotion 3 – Pacman symbol

Pacman is a really old game that is still played in arcades around the world. Its a fun little character that runs around eating food and trying to avoid being eaten it self. It’s a great game and a great symbol to use in your Facebook chats. Maybe it will bring out some old memories.

At some point in everyones life they were in love or maybe they are in love at the moment. There are a crazy amount of couples on Facebook. For this reason the heart is used very often. Its great for anything though, you don’t have to be in love with a person to use it. Maybe you want to share with your friends that you love a TV show or you love a certain candy. Using the cute heart is a great way to share that kind of information.

Best Facebook smile #1 – the classic smile

The smile is very simple and classic. It can be used for anyone and they won’t need you to explain anything to them. People can use it all around the world even if you don’t speck their language. It’s just a normal every day emoticon.

The list above might surprised you; maybe it isn’t correct in your eyes. Think hard about it how often you see people using these well know emoticons and smilieys. More often than not, correct? While playing with Facebook Chat I wondered if it supported emoticons. Turns out it does. But when I tried the >:-) emoticon (a ‘devil’) and saw it printed as boring text, I wondered, “what smilies does facebook actually support?”

Are you an 80′s baby? If you are, then you will probably remember coin-operated games featuring the amazing little yellow face with a hatred for ghosts…Pacman! His icon is featured in the #2 most popular emoticon – the Pacman face!

As we all know, Facebook chat has taken over as the defacto online chatting network. I don’t mean it’s better than MSN (in fact, ironically it seems that Facebook chat’s introduction into the world of online socialising has cemented MSN’s position as the best client based chat available), however it is certainly growing all the time (I read on an official Facebook blog that more than a billion messages are sent on the service every day, and who knows how many Facebook chat emoticons are sent!

Anyway, this site is all about those little emotes that we send every day to show our feelings towards our friends and families on Facebook chat. In the future I will provide you with a full list of the Facebook chat emoticons availabel to use, as well as their keyboard shortcuts, but for now let me talk to you about my three favourite smileys and why they are so cool and important to me!

Facebook emotion number 1 – The Pacman Facebook chat emoticon
When Facebook finally introduced its chat service, many people were suprised by how ‘light’ it seemed – it was pretty fast loading (after the initial teething problems) and it did not seem to have ahuge number of bells and whistles – it was simply a Facebook style functional chat program. However, once we started looking under the bonnet, we found that the programmers had actually included a large number of extremely cool chat emoticons for its users to take advantage of, and the all-round favourite was the Pacman emoticon! The rebirth of the tiny little yellow guy who eats ghosts was a tour-de-force for the Facebook programmers who seemed to revel in their retro outlook. Very cool!

The first of the ‘new’ emoticons to hit Facebook chat, and one of the most frequently used smileys is another throwback to the 1980s, and the movie scene which included one of the scariest animals ever to grace the big screen – Jaws the shark! The shark emoticon suddenly turned huge numbers of Facebook users into water-phobics, and a lot of people decided to hide behind their keyboards instead of going towards the water cooler again…

Facebook smilie number 3 – The Facebook chat penguin emoticons
The newcomer on the scene of chat on Facebook, but one of the most popular emoticons not just in this social network, but on the entire internet! The penguin represents a lot of things that computer geeks appreciate – linux (the open source operating system) even use the penguin as their mascot (although I’m not entirely sure why). This penguin has been used by huge numbers of people on Facebook chat as means of saying different things – but the most common is that they have a cute little crush on you!

These are, in my opinion, the best ones, but I realise that attitudes differ for everyone (and for different reasons). The Pacman, the shark and then penguin are my three favourite Facebook chat emoticons – what are yours?
